OpenAI has officially announced a major shift in its business model, confirming that it will begin testing advertisements within ChatGPT. The move, aimed at subsidizing the massive infrastructure costs of artificial intelligence, marks the end of the ad-free era for the platform’s free users.
Alongside the advertising push, the company is launching ChatGPT Go, a new $8-per-month subscription tier designed to bridge the gap between its free service and the $20-per-month Plus plan.
According to the official OpenAI announcement, the advertising pilot will initially target logged-in adult users on the Free and Go tiers within the United States.
OpenAI has clarified that premium tiers, including Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education, will remain entirely ad-free. For users on lower-tier plans, ads will appear as “sponsored” content at the bottom of AI responses, visually separated from the organic answer.
Addressing potential privacy concerns, OpenAI released a set of Advertising Principles to reassure its 800 million monthly users. The company stated:
Industry experts suggest this move will fundamentally alter the digital marketing landscape. As reported by CNN Business, the ability to place ads within a live conversation offers “highly targeted” opportunities that traditional search engines cannot match.
How the SEO Market is Affected:
OpenAI’s transition to an ad-supported model reflects the reality of the “personal super-assistant” era. While the company aims to keep intelligence accessible to everyone, the introduction of ads signals that the future of AI will be as much about commerce as it is about conversation.
For those eligible for the upcoming test, OpenAI says clear in-product notifications will appear before the first ads go live.
